Cashews for Depression

A friend told me that she has been eating two handfuls of raw, unsalted cashew nuts each day, in conjunction with a mostly raw foods diet, to treat depression and premenstrual symptoms, and that this has been astonishingly effective for her. She has stopped taking anti-depressant medication (under a doctor’s supervision). She never saw her last period coming: no cramps, no emotional roller-coaster, no tenderness.

The body needs the right balance of nutrients from food to create and distribute the chemicals it needs to function properly. When one eats well, the whole machine works better. Cashews contain a significant concentration of nutrients important for mental and emotional health. You can read more about that at doctoryourself.com.

I did not realize that the handful of cashews I scatter on pizza were to thank for my happiness. I thought it was the pizza.

  1. Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

Obviously, he must have been speaking of cashews!!!

  2. I just found your blog!! I do the same thing with cashews with pasta sauce! I just recently heard about cashews for depression, and was oddly fascinated by the notion that it would work. I am all about vegan eating, and non-western medication :-)
