It seems like the ideal shape for the reflector is a cone, and a wire (or some other material) circle could be secured at 3 or 4 spots equidistant from the point of the cone would nudge the sunshade closer to a ideal shape.
I love how you are describing the sun's rays and the black parts showing up. But, your inside??
woooohooo! thank you
Yesterday i used a box on the outside to form the shape with pegs, a pyrex dish over the pot with a cardboard cut out below the pot ( protect the reflector) and then cooked a potato that I enjoyed after 3 hours. It worked and I am pleased with the results. Winter in South Africa (Cape Town) now so no chance of doing it today.
I have a Question: What would be the effect if I use microwavable Ziplock bag instead of Oven bag? Would it do a better job at retaining the heat?
Anyways thank you for your video!
Shame of such childish things…you was only folding for most of the time..after it .nothing concluded
I like your idea and I'm wondering if a hoola hoop with a piece cut out of it would provide a suitable framework for the top perimeter. Just a thought
I like it! I have never cooked with solar energy, but look forward to trying it out. Hopefully it will save from using the stove in Freedom.
gracias

I saw another video where they used Velcro to make the oven but, I like your way much better. It only takes 15 seconds to put it together using clamps. Velcro requires lining up the strips so it stays together. Brilliant!
Thank you! This was soo helpful!
Looks like you might still be reading comments here, I did my own version of a sunshade solar cooker, I have some ideas you might use in the video I posted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8gToez6BXg I am using a heavier type of sunshade… my max temp so far has been 231°F and I do have some more ideas I intend to add… future videos on my project page in time… in one of your videos I saw the cut silicone mat that was used between bowls, had not done that yet, was considering it… any idea on the temperature improvement with using it. Figure I will go that route this winter when I get more clear weather…. nice videos.
What kind of pot did you use? Where were you (geographically) and what time of year when you were able to get such a high temperature? Thanks!!
could you use a cast iron dutch oven with this solar cooker?
These things should be teached at school, to boy scouts and also, i repeat, also to "Doctors without frontiers", etc. Drinking boiled water is very important in some countries. Very well made video.
As long as the beam is narrow enough, that sound like it'll work.
Why dont u just put in a dark room and shine a torch on it and then u will see if it is at the right angle and u don't have to buy a torch just get the torch app on ur phone
Yup! Trout! Will definitely try to get a vid up (if) when it happens!
Are you gonna cook the fish you catch? That would be even more cool!
Gonna try this on the next fishing trip…
Oh, I agree. It's the simplest to make solar cooker I know of and it works! I hope he has fun with it.
Oh, and thanks! I'm glad you enjoy my videos! Thanks for the feedback.
You can do as you suggest, certainly. Aluminum foil does dull over a year or two and need to be replaced but the same it true of this material. The only difference is that a car sunshade is pretty much an already made solar cooker whereas an aluminum foil and cardboard one take an hour or two to build the first time. I have both types.
why not simply use aluminum foil? It is much more reflective, just use it to wrap a cut out of cardboard box.. Is there a specific reason for using the sun shades?by the way, you're incredible I love your videos!
You can find the 98% reflective plastic mirror at carnivalmirror com.
24" by 54" piece is only $29 delivered in USA they shp overseas too.
My pleasure. Good eating!
Thanks.
try using velcro around the edges.
Ok then getting a pot as small as possible that is black as a main pot then getting a glass pot larger than the cooking pot. Yeah minimizing the mass of the black main pot for minimizing cook times would be good too. I think they make larger mason jars than the one I saw in your video about the first solar cooker would one of those work or maybe two halves of a plastic bottle like a soda bottle duck taped together.
There's no brand on it and I got it secondhand on freecycle. It's standard size, not for SUVs. Mine isn't the best anyway; it's very bumpy which means it doesn't reflect as much to the cooking pot. You'll also want to use a cooking bag around the cooking pot to hold in the hot air, though a glass or pyrex container would do a better job though they're harder to find since they have to be larger than the cooking pot. I agree re minimizing the mass.
