Too much of the world lacks access to clean drinking water. Engineer Michael Pritchard did something about it — inventing the portable Lifesaver filter, which can make the most revolting water drinkable in seconds. An amazing demo from TEDGlobal 2009.

Stupidity
Usually, TED talks are not promotional commercials, but this one definitely is.
Just how expensive are those units and cartridge refills? Each one is only good for about 1600 gallons (6000 liters). That's not very much considering cooking, bathing, cleaning, and drinking needs. Furthermore, that seems like a lot of work for a few cups at a time. How are the poor in those pictures supposed to obtain them let alone pay for them? Again, a rich guy in a 1st world country hasn't thought through the logistics. Even if you get an NGO to help, they would have to do this indefinitely through wars, famine, economic disasters, and plagues (like Covid) that shut down the world/country/area. This is fantasy thinking even when the product does work. NGOs would be more helpful and it would cost less to make a village-wide central solution rather than individual purification bottles.
boil water as the main filter, then allow your immune system to do its job. i drank water in countries were pollution was the norm…. i did get fairly sick, diarrea, vomiting and all but guess what? i now dont get sick and dont suffer from upset stomach easily…. because my immune system protects me. this guy is no more than a seller. If he cares for the poor as much as he says his price tag wouldnt be for the rich
??? Now what
very good video, I really like drinking good water👍👍👍😃😃
This was posted 13 years ago. Since then, we have gotten to at least 0.5 nanometers, and have done so because it was necessary to filter out other things in the water that weren't filterable at 2 nanometers. What did this guy just drink?
This is all good, but the government doesn't actually care about helping people
The biggest problem with some places having clean water and others not isn't poverty. Poverty never stopped science minded educated people from concluding that carbon filtration removes toxins. The problem is the people who think they don't have clean water because they're poor.
You take any natural disaster and you'll have some people drinking dirty water and claiming they're societal victims. You'll also have others who will immediately burn some wood, cover burnin wood with ash to let it create charcoal, then they'll put a pot on the fire while getting some sand and boiling it to kill any organisms and viri. THEN build a stacked filter using sand and charcoal. Then boil the water after every pour through.
This invention is brilliant, amazing, but it still falls right into the "We have to save these poor people" when in reality evolution hasn't kicked in for them to decide they need knowledge more than products.
This gentleman thinks you get some of these people with this water filter and they'll all drink. NO. You give a means of clean water to some they'll use it to barter outrageous amounts of money, goods or even "favors." for clean water.
let's remember the reason New Orleans never got it's water is the corruption of it's OWN people who controlled water distribution keeping it all on the tarmac all that time and even much longer.
So clean water is an evolutionary action, not a social action. Everything we give to people who haven't evolved to create it themselves means the'll always think there's some imbalance against them, instead of saying "hey, teach me that trick, I'd love to know how to survive."
There's no real such thing as poverty, only the choice of wanting to know how to create needed resources and the willingness to share it.
Take any 3rd world nation and ask why none of them have clean water yet we've been seeing filters sent to these places for decades. there's a reason they don't keep them. and that's called choice.
Thank you TED for bringing forward this idea
Rather spend time and money on birth control. Water is not the problem. Overpopulation is the problem.
184$ bottle and 104$ cathride
So our solids don't end up in rivers and oceans like plastics
He states that it is sterile, but is it PURE (no little bits of salts)?
This guy is genuinely trying to help people .I do not think he is doing this
for money only .Is it wrong to reward his effort and hardwork by buying a life saver bottle ?

North Pole moving south, the Magnetic South Pole is moving north, sun no longer yellow, people getting crazier, and we are about to experience world-wide flood and wildfire in the recurrent Micronova. It's already here Sun is white, first Horseman of the Apocalypse followed by sun turning red, then black. After CME, the sun will be Pale, final horseman of the Apocalypse–death. We're born of survivors of the Gothenburg event 12,000-ya & have survived 7 such micronovas, if prepared. I cover this in Surviving the Micronova
HOW MUCH ARE YOU GETTING OUT OF THIS ENDORSEMENT OR ADVERTISEMENT !!!! CAN PEOPLE AFFORD THIS WATER PURIFICATION TO BE DRINKABLE ?!?!?!?!
A bottle similar as the one he used is sold in Amazon at $269.99. Wonder who pay at this price, the African poor or government/tax payer?
‘1/2cent a day to run’ is a bloody lie! This guy is not honest!
hello everyone. For a project, I am planning to build a filter that filters factory water. For this, i, therefore, need a 15 nm cloth but I don't know where I can buy one. Can someone please guide me and help me with the problem I am facing. Thanx in advance.
Ridiculous price. This is about making money not saving lives
SO IF A RICH WHITE PERSON EVER GOES TO ONE OF THEESE COUNTRIES THEY CAN HAVE CLEAN WATER
TURNS OUT NONE OF THEESE FILTERS ACTUALLY ELIMINATE. GERMS THERE A BEING SUED
The bottle $269.00
The Jerry Can $329.00
Haha. I am sure the villagers will be able to afford it.
shooting each other for TV sets and water. Find these people maybe they knew how to purify water with a tv without electricity.
We just learnt how you made money….not how to save our lives. Thanks for wasting our time
It doesn't remove chemicals and pesticides
Definitely cool but it's a damn shame that they cost $270 a piece!!!!!!!!!
But kudos for the product. Great marketing too
So all the pics of the poor people with bad water just had to be black. This subliminal programming.
A very racist presentation.
this is just an ad lol
