Mt grandmother lived through the depression here in Pennsylvania. She was one of 12. They lived in North East PA. My great grandparents came from Poland. Bailystok Poland. They fled communism. So I am a family of coal miners . I still remember my grandmother sending packages to Poland ..sugar, coffee, candies, clothes. Money. One thing I'll say is you don't know what socialism or communism will bring until you've lived it. Nothing is free

Many of the recipes Clara cooks are very similar to the ones my dear depression surviving father used to make he was a WW11 veteran,but his mother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide with Turkey. She was fortunately taken in by the German Red Cross Orphanage and was spared starvation and eventually sent to America to marry my Grandfather.
